Custom Vertical Transportation Systems for the Marine Industry

Marine elevators represent one of the most technically demanding applications in vertical transportation engineering. Unlike conventional building elevators, marine lift systems operate in an environment continuously affected by vessel motions, structural vibrations, aggressive saline corrosion and severe space constraints, requiring dedicated engineering criteria and highly specialized design expertise.

EGL Elevators designs, manufactures and installs fully customized marine elevator systems engineered to deliver outstanding reliability, safety and long-term performance. Every installation is developed around the specific operational profile of the vessel, ensuring seamless integration with the ship’s structure, onboard systems and architectural layout.

Proven Experience in Naval Applications

EGL has developed extensive expertise in the design and manufacture of vertical transportation systems for luxury yachts, superyachts, passenger vessels, offshore installations and naval applications.

Among its most prestigious references is the supply of the marine elevator installed aboard the largest Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ever built by Cantiere Navale Vittoria, the renowned Italian shipyard specialized in military, paramilitary, commercial and workboats.

Commissioned by the Armed Forces of Malta, this project demonstrates EGL’s capability to engineer highly customized lift systems that meet the stringent technical, operational and reliability requirements associated with modern naval and defence platforms.

The experience gained through this project has further strengthened EGL’s engineering know-how in the development of marine elevator systems designed for the most demanding operating environments.

Engineered for Dynamic Marine Conditions

Marine elevators are continuously subjected to the six degrees of freedom generated by vessel movement:

  • Roll
  • Pitch
  • Heave
  • Yaw
  • Surge
  • Sway

These dynamic forces continuously affect structural loads, suspension rope tensions, guide rail reactions, braking performance and landing accuracy.

For this reason, EGL designs every marine elevator using dynamic safety coefficients significantly higher than those required for conventional land-based elevators. Advanced structural calculations, fatigue assessments and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are applied throughout the engineering process to ensure maximum reliability under continuous dynamic loading.

Marine-Grade Materials and Corrosion Protection

Long-term durability in aggressive marine environments depends on the careful selection of certified materials and corrosion protection systems.
Typical construction materials include:

  • AISI 316L stainless steel
  • Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steels
  • Marine-grade aluminium
  • IP66/IP67 electrical components
  • A4-80 stainless steel fasteners
  • Marine Approved LSZH Flame Retardant cabling

Corrosion resistance is further enhanced through C5-M protective coating systems, multi-layer anti-corrosion treatments and sealed electrical enclosures specifically developed for offshore environments.

Vibration Control and Space Optimization

Continuous structural vibrations generated by propulsion systems and hull dynamics are managed through reinforced guide rails, vibration-damping supports, resilient fixings and reinforced electrical cabinets specifically engineered for marine applications.
To maximize the efficient use of onboard space, EGL develops compact installation solutions including:

  • Machine Room Less (MRL) configurations
  • Compact traction machines
  • Remote control cabinets
  • Slim automatic landing doors
  • Customized shaft arrangements

Each project is optimized to integrate efficiently within the vessel’s structural layout without compromising accessibility or maintainability.

Drive Technologies

Depending on vessel type and operational requirements, EGL develops:

  • Electric traction elevators for cruise ships and passenger vessels
  • Hydraulic elevators for yachts and offshore platforms
  • Gearless traction systems
  • Hydraulic telescopic elevators
  • Heavy-duty cargo lifts
  • Rack & Pinion elevators
  • Inclined elevators
  • Fully customized lifting solutions

Every system is engineered according to the vessel’s operational profile and project-specific requirements.

Functional Safety

Passenger safety remains the primary objective throughout every engineering phase. Marine elevators developed by EGL integrate multiple redundant safety systems including:

  • Dual braking systems
  • Overspeed governors
  • Progressive safety gears
  • Anti-drift devices
  • Emergency lowering systems
  • UPS backup power supplies
  • Emergency batteries
  • Bridge communication interfaces
  • Fire detection system integration

Should weather conditions exceed the operational limits established during the engineering phase, the elevator can automatically be taken out of service and moved to a predefined safe landing, protecting both passengers and equipment.

Advanced Control Systems

Modern marine elevators operate as fully integrated subsystems within the vessel’s automation architecture.
EGL control platforms incorporate:

  • Marine-certified PLCs
  • Vector frequency drives
  • Remote diagnostics
  • 24/7 condition monitoring
  • Remote service connectivity
  • Predictive maintenance functions
  • Integration with Ship Management Systems
  • Onboard automation interfaces

This architecture maximizes operational availability while reducing maintenance costs throughout the system lifecycle.

Compliance with International Standards

Every EGL Marine Elevator is engineered in accordance with internationally recognized standards and marine regulations, including:

  • ISO 8383 – Lifts on Ships
  • EN 81-20
  • EN 81-50
  • EN 13015

In addition, each project is developed in compliance with the technical requirements of the vessel’s Flag Administration and major Classification Societies, including:

  • RINA
  • DNV
  • Lloyd’s Register
  • Bureau Veritas
  • American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
  • ClassNK

Engineering documentation typically includes structural calculations, dynamic analyses, material certifications, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning procedures and Sea Trial documentation to support the vessel’s certification process.

Engineering Beyond Standard Products

Every vessel presents unique operational requirements, structural constraints and certification criteria.

For this reason, EGL Elevators does not offer standardized products. Every marine elevator is developed as a bespoke engineering solution, combining structural performance, operational reliability, advanced safety systems and architectural integration.

From luxury superyachts and cruise ships to offshore platforms and military vessels, EGL delivers vertical transportation systems engineered to perform safely and reliably in the world’s most demanding marine environments.
